ALESSANDRO TWOMBLY Alessandro Twombly was born in Rome in 1959, where he currently lives and works. Throughout the work of Alessandro, the sensation of colour is exploited and celebrated with a passion ungoverned by rules or convention. Strange, hieroglyphs, and primitive flame like apparitions, mingle with the brightest, purest flowers, and feminine flower like beings, in an explosion of beauty, passion, innocence and nostalgia. The viewers will feel torn between the luxury of satiation amongst the shapes and colours, and a desire to interpret the story, while searching themselves for where and when these extraordinary image sensations have been encountered before. Alessandro, has had several solo shows with galleries in the United States and Europe, Including recent exhibitions with Galerie Alain Noirhomme in Brussels, and Galerie Aurel Scheibler in Cologne. It is the third time he has shown with Evergreene, and the first time he has shown with two galleries concurrently.

Evergreene is proud to annouce its third show. From January 23 to February 28 2003 Evergreene will be exhibiting scuptures, paintings and drawings by Alessandro Twombly. This is his second show in association with Evergreene/Greene Gallery, the first having taken place in September 2000. Gèa the title of the show is a word taken from Greek mythology and it means the generator of all existing things or Mother Earth. It it to this primal or archetypal level of consciousness that Alessandro Twombly's images are striving to connect. In a general sense, there is in Alessandro Twombly's work a relentless desire to pursue and capture what is seminal to form in its relation to its appearance. Seemingly abstract or of no precise derivation, his work always maintains a close link to nature or to a cultural filtering of nature. The result of this philosphical pursuit ie embodied in a broad body of work in a variety of media: in this latest evolution, the sculptural space had been broken open to reveal light and space, while the sculptures remain uncompromising in their massiveness. Modelled in marble and resin, they have an opaque transluscence which allows for subtle alterations in their nature as the light around them changes. It is these together with the large paintings and diptychs, either oil on paper or acrylic or mixed media on canvas, which have a life and spirit that we cannot necessarily place. This is the common denominator (together with his treatment of matter and light) that unites Twombly's work, and translates itself further into a study of form and colour in his numerous vibrant amorphous drawings. Through whichever medium: sculpture, painting or drawings, the viewer will experience organic forms, of mineral, animal or vegetable origin coalescing to form fantastical hybrids. |
